Theatre for Health & Wellness Education

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Below are the questions we’re often asked. If you don’t see your question listed, please call us at 207-221-4491 or email chall4@une.edu.

What is the advantage of using theatre for health and wellness education?
Our clients say that the most significant value of our programming is that the shows provide awareness, education, and stimulate discussion about complex issues. Our plays are realistic and powerful portrayals of the subject matter, creating a common connection between students, parents, teachers, and importantly, local resources and hotlines designed to offer ongoing support.

What is your booking process?
Add Verb Productions employs a step-by-step booking process designed to help the site coordinator (the person putting together the presentation for the school/community/conference) put on an effective and successful performance. We also provide funding and booking ideas for our programs.

Do I need to do anything before I bring a program to my school or community?
Our programs are not designed to be one-off plays; rather there is a level of commitment and active planning involved on the part of the site coordinator. A big part of that planning is the client’s responsibility to gather the all-important panel members (agencies, advocates, health professionals) to lead the post-discussion. The site coordinator’s check list is a valuable tool throughout the planning process and our booking agents are more than happy to assist throughout to make the production a success.

Can I buy the rights to the plays?
Unfortunately, Add Verb Productions does not sell the rights to the plays at this time.

How far do your programs travel?
Add Verb programs travel nationally and internationally. Please note that the client is responsible for travel costs.

What is included in the cost of each program?
Our programs include a comprehensive set of tools, along with the play itself, to ensure that your community has the best experience possible. Ongoing support from your booking agent is also included.

I’d like to use one of your scripts for an audition monologue. Can you send me the script?
Unfortunately, Add Verb Productions does not provide its scripts for public use at this time.

How much time do we need to block out for each program?
Usually, it is recommended that communities carve out at least one hour to cover both the play and the post-discussion activities. Programs that include curriculum supplements advise carving out two to three classroom meetings in addition.

Do we have to have the immediate post-show debrief?
Yes. It is highly recommended to include the immediate post-show discussion in order to explore audience reactions, questions, and concerns. In addition, Add Verb programming is designed to work in tandem with the action of introducing audience members to the all-important community resources available for support (hotlines, agencies, advocates, and health professionals). If there is a complication with the post-play discussion, please contact your booking agent and an alternative option may be discussed.

Do we have to bring in sexual assault/domestic violence and/or eating disorder experts? Or can our staff/faculty members serve on the post-discussion panel?
It is HIGHLY recommended, as a safety measure, that any staff or faculty members acting on the panel are experts in the field of sexual assault/domestic violence and/or eating disorders.

Do we have to pay panel members?
Yes. A $50.00 honorarium is required for each panel member appearing post-play. Please note that this honorarium only applies to panel members NOT employed by the school (e.g., if the school nurse is a panel member, that individual does not receive an honorarium). Please also note that the price of the honorarium IS INCLUDED in the price for the program and paid by Add Verb Productions.

How large can the audience be?
Add Verb programs have seen very large audiences (1,000) and very small audiences (five). As a rule, discussion is always easier with a smaller audience; however, wonderful post-discussions have occurred with large audiences. Some communities opt to show two performances in one day (for example, a day show for students and an evening performance for parents and community members) to ensure a smaller audience.

What age is each show appropriate for?
The Thin Line is recommended for middle school (11 years old and up), high school, college, and adult audiences. You the Man is recommended for 8th grade (12-13 years old and up), high school, college, and adult audiences. Major Medical Breakthrough is recommended for practicing physicians and nurses, as well as first- and second-year preclinical medical students, social workers, and allied health professionals.

Can you do more than one show per day?
Yes. An Add Verb program can be presented up to three times in one day (one-actor plays).

Can the shows be performed in other venues besides a theater?
Yes, as long as there is enough room for the performance. Details are included in the Discussion Guide, which clients receive upon booking a program. For more information, please contact chall4@une.edu.

Can we videotape or record the performance?
Unfortunately, Add Verb Productions does not permit videotaping performances at this time. For more information on this policy, please contact chall4@une.edu.

When is payment due and do you require a deposit?
There is no deposit required upon booking a show. Payment in full is to be sent to Add Verb Productions on the day of the performance. Details are included in the Discussion Guide.

Do the plays feature professional actors?
Yes, all of our performers are professional actors who have been directed by Add Verb’s playwright and executive director, Cathy Plourde.
